I am a devoted fan of Warhammer 40,000; everyone close to me enough to sit at a table and have dinner together knows me. It is one of my favorite fictional settings and probably my absolute favorite to write fan fiction for thanks to its malleability.
Less people know that I am also an admirer of Troika!, the TTRPG game by the Melsonian Arts Council. I discovered Troika! around the same time I stumbled upon The Book of the New Sun by Gene Wolfe, and the two hit me with their subversive approach and introduced me to the science-fantasy and the weird. I never played a full campaign with Troika!, but the game oozes potential as a framework for endless customization.
Hence, I want to start a new irregular project here on the blog: Troikammer!. My goal is to take Troika! and fashion it after the Warhammer 40,000 setting. I am talking about new backgrounds, new weapons, new spells, new monsters, and new rules.
I intend to approach this project like freeform game design practice. So, some rules are in order:
- Entries in this series will be short, fast and rarely playtested beforehand.
- Expect typos and incoherencies.
- There will not be a regular schedule; instead I will keep post when I like it.
- The project is a fan creation which will be explicitly set in the Warhammer 40,000 setting and, as such, will be released completely free of charge.
- That being said, once I feel the project is complete, I will revise all the entries and publish them as a single book, which I would strip of any direct reference to copyrighted material.
I am tempted to say “let’s make an entry per week”, but my weekly writing schedule is already filled enough with publishing a completed chapter for either Tales from Glasstown or Corri Ragazza Corri. Adding more stuff would put unnecessary pressure on my shoulders.
That is all. I am quite excited for Troikammer!. My notebook already holds a couple of monsters which will soon see the light on the blog. I hope you will like it.
